THE VICTIM CALLED NIGERIA by Edmond Eko

Day 66
#365daypoetryforadvocacyandsocialchangechallenge

I am a polity in distress
Maimed and emasculated

I've lost my glorious days
Alas!I sit askew with shame

I'm a victim of circumstance
Sandwiched by two opposing forces

Where do I go from here?
How do I ward off these monsters?

I'm distraught and sad
Fraught by myriad vices

I've been deceived many a time
By evil walking in simple ordinariness

But is it my fault to be richly blessed?
Is it my fault to be raped by my own children?

My limbs are weakened and numbed
My brows tired by onslaught of woes

I've been beleaguered and wounded
By pelts coming from within

But I've kept my faith, perhaps too long
Now many deride and scorn upon my name

I'm the practical jokes of parliamentary sessions
I've been defaced and smeared by my very own!

Forced to feed on my innards
Denying me the brimming wealth of my barns

See how they loot and divide my possessions
Even before the dusk following the mouthwatering promises!

They bicker and fight shamefacedly over my empire
While I lie feverishly cold in waste...

They're the same family horsemen jousting for power
The same messianic oligarchy changing houses for fun

I'm torn apart and bereft
Cut opened with sword of greed

...but lying here in my pool of blood
There's a tiny flicker of light

A slow groping speck of light in the dark
Coming to take the centre spot like a circus light

Could this be my resuscitation
Or just a reprieve for another looming evil?

I'm the victim called Nigeria
See how I bleed with dismembered limbs!
