(for all victims of unrequited love)
Once I met a girl named Prettyface Mary
The likes of whom set foot on our beaten path so rarely.
Her presence was like sunshine pure and golden
In an overcast season of promises made and broken.
Consumed by her overpowering radiance,
I felt entrapped within her magnetic ambience.
Gushing in admiration unbridled,
My opening line to her, I pronounced softly, unguarded.
‘Prettyface Mary,’ I quipped.
‘May I remain bathed in your cosy presence till eternity?’
To my entreaty,
Prettyface Mary beat a silent retreat.
Still, I persevered.
To her, I said, ‘If no answer is forthcoming from you, my dearie
‘Then, I fear my heart
Will into a thousand fragments remain shattered.’
Prettyface Mary was unyielding
Perhaps my style was discomfiting.
So to a different strategy I placed my hope
And to the goddess of poetry I duly approached.
Missives in droves I penned to Prettyface Mary.
With no reply from her, I became frantic and weary.
But then, I was standing on my head in love
With Prettyface Mary; and by Jove, I was.
Now looking back with my head the right way round,
I understand why Prettyface Mary didn't think it sound
To share her cosy presence till eternity
With someone in a world; so filled with the air of looming uncertainty.
